SPEECH BY
MASTER RU SUN, ABBOT, YUN YANG TEMPLE,
NARREE WARREN, VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA.
Founder’s Day Speech read on behalf of Master Ru Sun by Mr Julian Bamford, Master of Ceremonies.
Master Ru Sun is overseas at the moment and sends his deepest apologies for not being able to personally attend
today. Master Ru Sun has asked that a speech be made on his behalf.
John D. Hughes and Master Ru Sun were close friends for many years. They met regularly and although they did not
share language, they were able to communicate with ease.
The high regard that Master Ru Sun held for John was shown during the Da Mon Sung (Ulambana) ceremony held at
the Yun Yang Temple where John was in attendance. A ceremony of this type was the only one Master Ru Sun
ever conducted for an individual. This is an honour which cannot be brought.
Master Ru Sun also presided over ceremonies at the Springvale Crematorium, also a first occurrence as Master Ru
Sun does not attend individual events of this type but always sends his Monks and Nuns instead. Honours such
as these are only given to great beings.
For a Chinese Buddhist Monk, these are the highest ways to honour a friend at such times.
We believe that their minds mixed like water and neither time nor distance nor rebirth can affect this. The
minds of great beings are always like this.
During his life, John performed countless good deeds and blessed and brought many beings to the Buddha Dhamma.
May these blessings resonate forever.
On behalf of Master Ru Sun, we wish to pay respect to John D. Hughes and wish great success for the opening of
this new meditation hall built in his honour.
